Motorcycle riders are about 35 times more likely than the people in passenger vehicles to be involved in a fatal accident every time they travel, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). What may be just as distressing as this is the fact that, in many cases, motorcycle accidents are caused by some preventable mistake, reckless behavior or negligence.

In these cases, our attorneys are here for accident victims, helping them to protect their rights to compensation so they can focus on their recovery.

When fatal motorcycle accidents result in the untimely death of a loved one, families can also turn to our lawyers to help them secure the compensation they deserve so they can properly put their loved one to rest.

Negligence and Motorcycle Accidents

Regardless of how careful and diligent motorcyclists may be when riding, they cannot control other motorists’ or parties’ choices and, unfortunately, face a risk of getting into an accident whenever they ride.

After motorcycle accidents, Colorado Springs Motorcycle Accident Attorney Kenneth Shakeshaft will help victims defend their rights to compensation and justice.

Some of the specific types of negligence that can increase the risk of motorcycle accidents include (but are not exclusive to):

  • Other motorists’ negligence – When the drivers of passenger or commercial vehicles fail to watch out for motorcyclists, the risk of hitting riders increases substantially. What can compound these risks is when other motorists may be drunk, distracted and/or fatigued and, therefore, will be that much more careless and inattentive to riders on the road.
  • The negligence of parties responsible for keeping the roadways safe – Factors like potholes, blind turns and objects in the roads can be far more devastating to motorcycle riders who lack the same protections as people in passenger vehicles. When the cities or entities responsible for keeping the roads safe and properly maintained do not live up to this responsibility, riders are at a far greater risk of getting into serious accidents.
  • Manufacturers’ negligence – When essential components of motorcycles are defective, flimsy or otherwise flawed, the risk of motorcycle accidents will also increase. In these cases, the manufacturers of the defective parts (or even the technicians responsible for maintaining motorcycles) can be held responsible for compensating injured riders.

Motorcycle Accident Statistics

The following motorcycle accident statistics (published by the NHTSA) shed some light on the risks that riders commonly face:

  • More than 50 percent of all motorcycle accidents involve at least one other vehicle.
  • Of these multiple-vehicle motorcycle accidents, about 42 percent involved left-hand turn accidents (i.e., the motorcyclist was traveling straight when another vehicle made a left-hand turn in front of the rider).
  • Head injuries are the leading cause of riders’ deaths after motorcycle accidents.
  • Riders who don’t wear helmets are 40 percent more likely to sustain a fatal head injury when riding. These riders are also about 15 percent more likely to sustain nonfatal head injuries than motorcyclists who wear helmets.
