As data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicates, nearly half of all teen driver accidents that ended in fatality involved speeding by the teen motorist. This is an extremely tragic fact about teen driver accidents, as speeding is an entirely preventable factor, and lives could have been saved if drivers had just complied with the posted speed limits.

Here, it’s also important to point out that:

  • Speeding is often linked to other reckless or negligent driving behaviors like drinking and driving or texting while driving.
  • Teens are more likely to speed when they are driving with teen passengers, so it’s best for parents to strongly encourage their children not to drive around with other teens.

4.  Although all states have Zero Tolerance laws, drunk driving is still a big problem – and is still causing devastating teen driver accidents.

Of all of the teens killed in fatal teen driver accidents each year in the U.S., nearly 30 percent of them are had been drinking alcohol prior to getting behind the wheel. This is another terrible fact about teen driver accidents because it underscores the facts that:

  • The reckless choices teen drivers can make can end up costing people’s lives – even their own.
  • Despite all of the very public campaigns encouraging drivers to never drive after drinking alcohol, teens are still driving while intoxicated and, in so doing, increasing the risk of fatal teen driver accidents.

To start to reduce the incidence of fatal teen driver accidents caused by drunk teens, the NHTSA is urging parents to reinforce how important it is that they never drive drunk.
