Exchanging information with other motorists is one of the essential steps to take after motor vehicle accidents. Another critical step is calling us for help getting the compensation you may deserve.

If possible, make sure that you get some specific info from the other motorists involved in the traffic accident. In fact, for each involved driver (and other involved parties), make sure you note their full legal names and contact info. Additionally, be sure to note their:

  • Driver’s license numbers
  • Makes, models and license plate numbers for the involved vehicles
  • Insurance providers and policy numbers.

As you do this, here are some helpful tips to keep in mind:

  • Consider getting the names and contact info for any witnesses to the accident.
  • As you take down this info, consider using your cellphone or other mobile device so that you can text and/or email all of the info to yourself.
  • If you do end up using your cell phone or mobile device and the device has a camera, consider taking a picture of each involved motorists’ driver’s license to facilitate the exchange of info.

Step 4 – Take pictures of the damage caused by the accident.

Another critical step to take after motor vehicle accidents is to take pictures of as much of the resulting damage as you can. These pictures can be vital pieces of evidence later, as they can back up your explanation of the events that occurred before and during the accident. As you take these photos, here are some helpful tips to keep in mind:

  • Snap photos of all of the damage to your vehicle, including any obvious dents, broken windows/mirrors, etc.
  • Take pictures of the other vehicles involved in the accident.
  • Take pictures of any immobile objects that may have been hit by the vehicles in the collision.
  • Snap photos of any visible injuries you and/or any passengers in your vehicle may have sustained in the accident.

As with the information you collect from other drivers, using your cell phone to take these photos – and then to text or email them to yourself – is a smart idea, as many of these mobile devices are equipped with good cameras and having copies of these photos in your text or email inbox can allow you to easily send them out to others who may need them in the future (like, for instance, an attorney or your insurance provider).

We will wrap up our discussion of what to do after motor vehicle accidents in the upcoming conclusion to this blog series – be sure you look for it!
